Blocked drains, blocked sewer lines, or a blocked storm water pipe are some of the most frustrating and inconvenient residential and commercial plumbing problems you can experience. These situations get even worse if you’re experiencing raw sewage running out of the damaged pipes. As experienced commercial plumbers Sydney, we’ve come across all the early warning signs of a blocked drain. We’ve listed them below to help you recognise whether a drain is blocked or not.

Gurgling Sounds

This is one of the most common early warning signs that you have a blockage in your sewage drain pipe. You are likely to hear the gurgling sound just after you flush the toilet, although the noise may come from the toilet drain, sink, bath or shower. You might hear gurgling from multiple sources including toilets, bathtubs and showers. This occurs due to the water from the flushed toilet displacing trapped air in the drainage system. The gurgling occurs when that trapped air pushes up through the water trap.

Bad Smells Coming From Your Drains

If you notice bad smells coming from out of your drains, it may be a sign you have a blocked drain. The blockage occurs because some debris, such as hair, food scraps or something else, is preventing the proper flow of water. This means stagnant water is mixing with decomposing matter within the pipes, causing some nasty odours.

Water backs up in Strange Places

When you have a blocked drain, you may start to notice some “unusual” behaviour from the drains in your home. For example, when you flush your toilet, you may see water start gurgling back up into your bath tub, shower drain or laundry tub.  This means that waste water is trying to leave your home, but is unable to find a way out because of a drain blockage. This could potentially get rather messy, as the water will return to your home via other drain lines.

Slow Drainage

One of the most obvious signs of a drain blockage is a slow emptying sink or bathtub. Take a look at the shower floor for this too. If it is acting like it has a plug when it obviously doesn’t, that’s probably a drainage issue and a blockage problem. The problem typically becomes worse over time, too. It’s best to call a plumber as soon as you notice it.

Jet Blasting Drainage Solutions

Jet blasting will ensure your drain is free from blockages and any unwanted debris. The jet blasting process involves the scouring of sewer pipes with constant streams of high pressure water from a specially designed hose. The water dislodges all the dirt that causes blockages to fall down the pipe. This efficient and cost effective drainage solution means the debris is completely removed from your line, and your chances of blockage in the future are minimised.
